Vintage Alpina President Swiss Watch, Domed dial, Bumper Automatic Cal. 584C, 18K Solid Gold from 1950's

The President was Alpina's flagship in the 1950s, and this example represents it in its best configuration: an 18K solid gold case housing the manufacture's own bumper automatic. Alpina was among the relatively few Swiss houses of the era producing automatic movements in-house, which makes the President a genuinely interesting proposition for collectors looking beyond the usual names.

The 35mm case is solid 18K yellow gold, confirmed by the 0.750 hallmark and Swiss Helvetia head stamp on the inner case back, alongside the Alpina Watch Co. maker's mark. At 43mm lug to lug it wears like a proper mid-century gentleman's watch — substantial without excess. The silvered dial is a quiet showcase of 1950s dial work: faceted, fan-cut applied gold markers, an Arabic 12, gold dauphine hands, and a framed date window at 3 o'clock. The triangle logo above the Alpina President signature ties it back to the brand's earliest emblem.

Inside is the Caliber 584C, Alpina's in-house bumper automatic with 17 jewels, the C designating the calendar function. Rather than a full rotor, a pivoting weight swings between two buffer springs to wind the mainspring — the characteristic gentle knock of a bumper is part of the charm. The copper-finished movement is signed Alpina and carries its patent marking.
