Vintage IWC Swiss Watch, Art Deco Tank Watch, Square Steel Case, Cal. 62, Black Gilt Dial from 1940s (Copy)

This vintage IWC tank dates to the 1940s and shows the restrained side of Swiss watchmaking from that era. The square stainless steel case measures 27mm x 40mm with stepped, faceted lugs - a clean Art Deco design that wears larger than the numbers suggest and sits comfortably under a cuff.

The black gilt dial is the centerpiece. Slim gilt stick markers, a script International Watch Co. Schaffhausen signature, and a square-framed sub-seconds register at six give it a quiet, architectural balance. Gilt baton hands and a domed crystal complete a dial that has survived eight decades with its character intact.

Inside is the hand-wound IWC Caliber 62 - one of the rarer movements from Schaffhausen, produced only from 1938 to 1949 in a run of roughly 13,800 pieces. It is closely related to the Caliber 83 used in IWC's wartime pilot's watches, built to the same standard of finishing. The serial number 1120576 dates this example to the mid-1940s. The movement has been serviced and is running well.
