Vintage Longines x West End Watch Co. Cal. 13.34, Enamel Radium Dial from 1926
This watch comes from the period when Longines was supplying watches to West End Watch Co., a brand that played a huge role in making Swiss watches popular in India, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The Swiss base of West End was located in St-Imier, not far from Longines and it seems that Jacques-Arnold Amstutz had a good relationship with Longines. From the early 1910s Longines supplied watches to West End branded with the West End name and logo, the only company in the world to which this privilege was granted and which contributed significantly to West End's reputation. In the 1950s the management of Longines reconsidered this arrangement and from 1955 only watches with Longines branding were supplied to West End.
The enamel dial is classic 1920s — elegant, legible, and well-preserved. Its bold, applied radium-filled Arabic numerals and matching cathedral hands. The small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock adds both balance and charm.
Inside ticks the reliable Cal. 13.34, an early manually wound movement Longines produced from around 1910, with a matching serial number 4621670 on movement and case back. This one is signed by West End and features the signature gold gilt finish, heat-blued screws. It was rarely cased in Staybrite steel, which was a premium material at the time, more commonly reserved for high-grade, water-resistant models later on.
Combined with the signed enamel dial, matching movement and case serials and cal. 13.34 Staybrite Steel case this is a configuration seldom seen — even by seasoned collectors. Everything about this piece is rare. It is, without exaggeration, approaching museum-level significance.
