This vintage Baume & Mercier Genève chronograph is a stunning and rare example - what sets this piece apart is its original black dial - a seldom-seen feature that adds to its desirability among collectors. The dial features a dual-register chronograph layout, luminous Arabic numerals, and a classic tachymeter scale around the periphery, all highlighted by warm patina and syringe-style hands.

Powered by the reliable Landeron 48 movement, the chronograph operates a bit differently than typical chronographs: the top pusher starts the timer, the bottom pusher stops it, and a second press of the bottom pusher resets the hand to zero. With a case thickness of 13.4 mm and lug-to-lug span of 41.3 mm, this watch wears with timeless vintage proportions and bold presence. A rare and mechanically sound timepiece for any serious chronograph enthusiast.

About Brand

What makes Baume & Mercier an important vintage watch brand?

Baume & Mercier was founded in 1830 and is one of the long-established names in Swiss watchmaking. In the vintage watch market, the brand is respected for producing elegant dress watches, refined chronographs, and well-finished mechanical timepieces. Vintage Baume & Mercier watches combine classic design with reliable Swiss movements, making them attractive to collectors seeking understated luxury vintage watches.

Why is Baume & Mercier significant in vintage watch history?

Throughout the 20th century, Baume & Mercier developed a reputation for precision and aesthetic refinement. The brand received awards for chronometry and became known for balanced case proportions and clean dial layouts. Vintage Baume & Mercier watches from the 1940s–1970s reflect the golden era of Swiss mechanical watchmaking, offering quality construction and timeless styling.

Are vintage Baume & Mercier watches suitable for everyday wear?

Yes. Many vintage Baume & Mercier watches were designed as daily-wear dress watches and remain practical today. Models powered by reliable Swiss manual-wind and automatic movements, often sourced from high-quality movement manufacturers such as ETA, are known for durability when properly serviced. A well-maintained Baume & Mercier vintage watch can be worn regularly while maintaining its value as a collectible vintage watch.

What should collectors look for when buying a vintage Baume & Mercier watch?

When purchasing a vintage watch from Baume & Mercier, collectors should focus on:

  • Original dial and hands with correct period typography

  • Matching case reference and movement type

  • Clean case lines with minimal over-polishing

  • Evidence of professional servicing

Because many models were produced in precious metals or gold-plated cases, condition plays a key role in long-term value.

Which vintage Baume & Mercier models are most collectible?

Some of the most desirable vintage Baume & Mercier watches include:

  • 1940s and 1950s chronographs

  • Classic dress watches in solid gold cases

  • Early Riviera models from the 1970s

  • Slim manual-wind models with minimalist dials

These watches are valued for their elegance, wearability, and connection to mid-century Swiss vintage watch design.

Are vintage Baume & Mercier watches a good investment?

Baume & Mercier offers accessible entry into the vintage watch market, particularly for collectors interested in classic Swiss dress watches. While not positioned at the highest luxury tier, well-preserved vintage Baume & Mercier watches maintain steady collector interest and represent strong value for quality Swiss craftsmanship.
