This vintage Glashütte wristwatch, produced between 1948 and 1957, is a remarkable artifact from a pivotal era in German watchmaking. After World War II, the renowned A. Lange & Söhne was nationalized and incorporated into the Glashütte Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), which centralized much of East Germany's watch production. The watch reflects the early post-war efforts of German watchmakers to rebuild and innovate in an industry that had been disrupted by the war. The GUB Caliber 28 Q1, housed in this watch, was one of the first large-scale wristwatch movements developed in East Germany, demonstrating the resilience and technical expertise of the Glashütte craftsmen.

The movement of this watch, the GUB Caliber 28.1, is rooted in A. Lange & Söhne’s World War II era observation watches, particularly the Caliber 48.1. It represents the transition from military to civilian watchmaking in the GDR. The movement’s development after 1945 showcased the ability of East German watchmakers to adapt their advanced mechanical knowledge to a new era of production. The movement includes 15 jewels and a monometallic balance with 16 weight screws, and it features the Glashütte sunburst finish.

During this time, Glashütte watches were often labeled with "Q1" quality marks, a designation signifying the high standards of GDR manufacturing. This particular watch is labeled with
Lange VEB Glashütte Q1 mark.

The watch has been professionally serviced by a skilled watchmaker, however, as is common with many vintage watches, it may experience a daily variation of approximately ±5 minutes.

About Brand

What is GUB and why is it important in vintage watch history?

GUB, short for Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, was the state-owned watch conglomerate established in 1951 in Glashütte, East Germany. It unified several historic Glashütte manufacturers under one organization during the post-war period. In the vintage watch market, GUB represents an important chapter of German watchmaking, preserving the technical traditions of Glashütte during the Cold War era.

Why are GUB vintage watches significant?

GUB maintained the long-standing Glashütte tradition of precise mechanical watchmaking despite political and economic limitations. Many vintage GUB watches feature in-house movements with classic German construction elements such as three-quarter plates and robust finishing. These watches reflect both technical resilience and historical depth within the broader vintage watch landscape.

Are vintage GUB watches suitable for everyday wear?

Yes. Many vintage GUB watches were designed as practical dress watches and everyday mechanical timepieces. Models powered by movements such as the GUB caliber 60.1, 60.3, 69.1, or later 70.1 are known for durability and serviceability. When properly maintained, a GUB vintage watch can be worn regularly while retaining its collectible value.

What should collectors look for when buying a vintage GUB watch?

When purchasing a vintage watch from GUB, collectors should consider:

  • Original dial and hands with period-correct typography

  • Correct in-house GUB movement

  • Proper Glashütte engravings and serial numbers

  • Overall mechanical condition and evidence of servicing

Because GUB production spanned several decades, identifying the correct movement and case combination is important for authenticity.

Which GUB vintage models are most collectible?

Some of the most desirable vintage GUB watches include:

  • Dress watches with classic silver or champagne dials

  • Early post-war Glashütte production models

  • Watches powered by the caliber 60.1 or 70.1

  • Transitional pieces linking GUB to the later development of Glashütte Original

These watches are valued for their connection to traditional German watchmaking and their understated design.

Are GUB vintage watches a good investment?

GUB watches remain relatively undervalued compared to other German brands in the vintage watch market. As interest in Glashütte heritage continues to grow, well-preserved GUB models have gained increased collector attention. Their historical importance and limited production numbers support long-term appeal.
