This vintage Sura wristwatch represents a fascinating chapter in Soviet horological history. Produced briefly around 1960 by the Penza Watch Factory, the Sura brand was one of the few men’s lines developed at the plant, which was otherwise known for specializing in compact ladies' watches throughout the 1950s.

The watch is powered by the mechanical Caliber 2009, a 15-jewel movement developed in-house at Penza. Although originally intended for smaller timepieces, Cal. 2009 was used in a short run of men’s models—including the Sura—before production of the movement was moved to Minsk Watch Factory in 1955. This makes examples like this one particularly scarce and historically notable.

Housed in a 25 mm x 27 mm gold-tone case with an assertive 36.4 mm lug-to-lug span, the design is compact yet stylish, emphasizing sharp lugs. The 10 mm thickness keeps it slim on the wrist, while the angular architecture and vertical brushing lend it a touch of mid-century modernism.
The Sura brand was phased out just a few years after its launch, when Penza Watch Factory unified its production under a single trademark: Zaria.
